Pre-Meiji Era (before 1868)
This section encompasses all of Japan's coinage from before the Meiji Restoration in 1868.

Types of coins range from the very common cast 1 mon, 4 mon and 100 mon Kanei Tsuho, of which there are many varieties including mintmarked and iron types, to the less common early coinage and 10 mon, to hammered bullion such as mameita gin ("bean silver", stamped round-ish pieces of silver), bar coinage, and rare oban (large gold plates covered with inked calligraphy).
